The Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya (henceforth ICC), is a public law entity of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Autonomous Government of Catalonia) subjected to the private legal legislation and it is ruled by both the Law 16/2005, of December 27th , of the geographic information and of the Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya and the Decree 398/2006, of October 24th . The ICC is assigned to the Department of Land Policy and Public Works of the Generalitat.

From its creation in late 1982, and resuming the task started by the geographic services of the Mancomunitat and the Generalitat during the Republic time, the ICC has focussed its efforts to place on a innovation and modernity levels either the studies and the cartographic production in Catalonia.

 

The following duties correspond to the ICC, in the exercise of the competences of the Generalitat about geodesy and cartography:

  • Establish, manage, maintain and improve the physical infrastructure as well as the necessary technological systems to build and manage the Integrated Geodetic Positioning System of Catalonia and the maintenance of the topographic data bases which give support to. Within the limits of the competences of the Generalitat, the Integrated Geodetic Positioning System of Catalonia (SPGIC) gives support to the great scale cartographic series, to the territorial and town planning, to the cadastre, to the public work in Catalonia and to analogue activities where it can be applicable to.
  • Carry out the aerial metric image coverings of the Catalonia's territory, with both passive and active sensors, and maintain these sensor and the necessary bases of information and knowledge to handle both the geographic and thematic data produced by aerospace remote sensing.
  • Establish and maintain the cartographic data and the series derived from, which give support to the establishing of urban and territorial series.
  • Collaborate with Spanish Administration means which have competences of cartographic nature and carry out the coordination and cooperation with the local means of Catalonia in this field.
  • Lead and manage the Map Library of Catalonia, which coordinates the collection and the study of the geographic and cartographic existing documents.
  • Establish, arrange, divulge and maintain the Spatial Data Infrastructure of Catalonia 'IDEC- and, at the same time, collaborate with other entities and means of the Generalitat to carry out and improve, in a permanent way, this infrastructure.
  • Execute studies, publish reports or make suggestions within the limits of its duties, addressed to the different departments of the Generalitat or the Government, both on their initiative or on its own one.
  • Publish and divulge cartographic products.
  • Organize, carry out, lead, advise and elaborate research programmes, innovation programmes and scientific and technical training programmes within the limits of its activities, by itself or jointly with other entities and means, particularly with the Catalan Universities and other organizations specialized in cartographic services.
  • Promote the public and private cartographic services, and also the research, teaching and technological development in the cartographic field.
